Take Exit #4 "Border Truck Route 89 South" (approx 60-minute trip). Turn right onto Mariposa Road. Fuel, food, and bathrooms at Phillips 66 Station/Mariposa Market next to Carl's Jr.  Reset odometer to zero.  Turn right on Mariposa Road and continue to the border about 2.5 miles.

Distance From Border = 8.0 miles

Drive through first checkpoint without stopping unless requested.

  • Red light and buzzer means pull into parking area for random check.
  • If you get a red light, don't panic. The Mexican Customs Official will inspect your vehicle and cargo. Smile and be cooperative, they are nice people.

Proceed on toll road to "21K Checkpoint".

  • Go to the Immigration booth and complete the tourist card (visa) form. You will need a passport or birth certificate and photo ID.
  • Drive to the Custom's Inspection area where you will choose one of the following options: Declaration of merchandise to be imported OR Activation of the Fiscal Control Light. If you have no merchandise to declare, you will take the left line, where you will encounter another red light/green light.
    • If you get a red light, you will have to stop your car and have it inspected.
    • If you get a green light, or after the inspection, you may proceed to your destination.

Stay on main road marked "Cuota" (toll road). Pay toll outside the town of Magdalena. There are bathrooms and food here. This is Mexico Highway 15 to Santa Ana.

Continue south on Highway 15 to next toll station. Pay last toll.

Distance From Border = 160.5 miles

Proceed south to Hermosillo. Go through the town or you can go around the town by making a left and going way around. We always go right through the middle of the town. It is quicker. Follow the road signs to Guaymas.

Distance From Border = 160.9 miles

Stay on Highway 15. Proceed south to San Carlos.

Pass a large Pemex station in the center of divided highway.  Use green colored Pemex for unleaded in Mexico.  The trip will take you 1 hour from Hermosillo to arrive in San Carlos.
Distance From Border = 225.7 miles

Stay to the right. Take the San Carlos turn-off to the right.

Distance From Border = 249.3 miles

Red brick road into town is lined with palm trees. The speed limit is enforced for the last 15-20 miles even if the bricks don't slow you down.

Distance From Border = 252.6 miles

About 2 miles into your turn you will come to a turnaround in the road.  You have to turn around and go back towards the main road (highway 15) to get into the turn off of Condo Pilar.  You will see signs for it.  Make a right onto our brand new paved road and go about 1 mile and you will arrive in paradise.

Welcome to San Carlos - you made it!
Prepare for a great vacation experience!

Please remember that the front desk is not like the front desk of a hotel.    The only thing they do is sign you in or out, fix broken things that are an emergency, and give helpful directions, etc.  They do not provide things for the unit that you don't have.  There will be two towels in each bathroom and if you are lucky a washcloth, but don't count your blessings!  If you want you can pay to have your own maid service in-between, otherwise there is none till you leave.

Have a wonderful time and I'd love feedback.
